Quit before it kills you…

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31st. It is mainly for awareness and create a no tobacco 24hour interval in the year. The ill-effects of tobacco consumption and its negative impact on the health are widespread leading to 6 million deaths each year worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. In the past twenty years, the day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance around the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco industry.

Tobacco causes decrease salivation and thus lead to dental caries, periodontal problems and also depreciate the health of the people consuming it. Eventually oral cancer is a growing challenge among the people who are addicted to consumption of various forms of tobacco. Mainly lung diseases are seen in the smokers along with congenital defects seen commonly in children whose mothers are smokers during pregnancy.

The epidemic of tobacco use is one of the greatest threats to global health. Oral health professionals should work for tobacco prevention by creating awareness among patients and communities. The WHO Oral Health Programme gives priority to tobacco control in many ways through the development of national and community programmes which incorporates oral health and tobacco issues, tobacco prevention through schools, tobacco risk assessment in countries, and design of modern surveillance systems on risk factors and oral health.

Present and future generations must be urgently protected from the devastating health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke.

Let’s Make Everyday a No Tobacco Day!!!
